What are the objectives of the program?

  • To gain knowledge of clinical and biological aspects of dementia prevention in Latin America (LA).
  • To connect with leaders and peers in the dementia field in LA.
  • Develop original research from draft to publication mentored by the LatAM-FINGERS leaders.

Key aspects of the program

The central aspects of the fellowship will include

  1. Conducting mentored research within the framework of the LatAm-FINGERS network.
  2. A one to four-month stay in the host center.
  3. Mentoring from one of the leaders from the host center.
  4. Working as an assistant for the LatAm-FINGERS Executive Committee.

Applicants must submit a research proposal that will be analyzed by a panel of experts. The proposal must include a research question that may be resolved using the trial’s data or by gathering additional information on the same participants or examining the biobank material. Applicants must decide to enroll their proposals into one of two different project tracks. The two project tracks are a) clinical/behavioral research and b) biobank studies (see the  project tracks section). The mentor for the applicant’s project must be a member of the LatAm-FINGERS network. The fellowship includes a one- to four-month stay in the nation where the activity will take place and a modest amount of financing for the project (see budget section).

The project tracks

Clinical/Behavioral studies:

Projects in this track should use clinical, behavioral, and psychological data collected during the LatAm-FINGERS trial to tackle a new or complementary issue related to the trial’s primary aim. Applicants can also propose collecting new behavior from study particioants (in this case, it is very important to clarify how it is planned and consider its feasibility). The network has defined some priority topics for this line of research: the role of diversity, socioeconomic determinants of health, risk factors for cognitive impairment,  cardiovascular health, cognition, and vulnerability. Other clinical/behavioral areas of interest may also be included.

Biobank Studies:

The LatAm-FINGERS initiative has a biobank in 12 countries where MRI, plasma, DNA, and APOE genotyping studies are stored. The projects presented in this way aim to bring new insights into the biology of the intervention and its response. Working with available data or obtaining new measurements from stored samples can be a project. Building human resources in biological data analysis is a network priority in this fellowship track. It is important to include a detailed explanation of how the objective will be achieved in the work plan. This should include a clear outline of the analysis techniques that will be required. Additionally, it is important to describe how the newly acquired skills and techniques will be implemented in the home center at the end of the fellowship.

Available Data

When developing the LOI consider only baseline data with no group assignment will be available for this project.

Eligibility criteria

  • Early career for a LMIC or diverse population
  • Full-time availability during the stay and part-time the rest of the year
  • Having a mentor who is part of the LatAm FINGERS team.

Funding and award period

Each fellowship award is limited to $10.000 USD. This amount must be used to cover the following expenses::

  • Travel expenses for the awardee to relocate to the host institution.
  • Living expenses for the duration of the fellowship.

The award provides for a maximum period of up to 4 months in the host institution.

The candidate’s project may include a source of external funding in addition to the award, in which case it must detail the source of financing and how it is articulated with the processes established by the work plan.

Requirements

Candidates must present:

  1. A work plan in which they must detail their research question, working hypothesis, and work- plan.
  2. A letter from the mentor includes acceptance, the mentoring plan, the benchmarks agreed upon with the mentee, and a justification of the benefit for the candidate and the trial in accepting the mentorship.
  3. Two letters of recommendation.
  4. A biosketch of the mentor and the candidate.
  5. A budget justification.

Categorías de proyectos

Estudios Clínicos/Comportamentales:

Estudios de Biobanco:

La iniciativa LatAm-FINGERS tiene un biobanco en 12 países donde se almacenan estudios de resonancia magnética, plasma, ADN y genotipificación de APOE. Los proyectos presentados de esta manera tienen como objetivo aportar nuevas ideas sobre la biología de la intervención y su respuesta. Trabajar con datos disponibles o obtener nuevas mediciones a partir de muestras almacenadas puede ser un proyecto. El desarrollo de recursos humanos en el análisis de datos biológicos es una prioridad de la red en esta categoría de beca. Es importante incluir una explicación detallada de cómo se alcanzará el objetivo en el plan de trabajo. Esto debe incluir un esquema claro de las técnicas de análisis que se requerirán. Además, es importante describir cómo se implementarán las habilidades y técnicas recién adquiridas en el centro de origen al final de la beca.

Criterios de elegibilidad

Financiamiento y período de beca

La beca cubre un período máximo de hasta 4 meses en la institución anfitriona.
